John RogersFIRST FRIDAY FORUM: The Importance of Early Childhood Education
Panel includes: Dennis Winters of Wisconsin DWD and Pam Kugi, Principal at SASD's Early Learning Center and Paul Bartelt, CEO, The Vollrath Co.
Is Early Childhood Learning a Wise Business Investment?
It has been reported that the soft skills needed to perform well in school and in the workplace are well established before the age of five. Our success or failure at making these years count in every child’s life will, without a doubt, significantly impact the quality of our future workforce. The steps we choose to take now -- or not -- will also predict the size of our prison population, the extent of our financial and social safety net and much more. Some say this could be the most important long term investment businesses and communities can make, with an ROI that surpasses most other efforts to bridge the skills gap.
What are the potential impacts of Early Childhood Learning on the business community right here in Sheboygan County? Making the case for community investment in Early Childhood Learning at this First Friday Forum is a distinguished panel:
Dennis Winters, Chief, Office of Economic Advisors, WI Department of Workforce Development
Pam Kugi, Principal/School Social Worker, Early Learning Center – Sheboygan Area School District
Paul Bartelt, CEO, The Vollrath Company, LLC
Paul Bartelt was quoted as saying, "Birth to 3 is a critical time period in the brain development and intellectual development of the children in our community. The effectiveness of the development of children in this age range follows them for the rest of their live. One of the most cost effective investments we can make to improve our future community and workforce is to invest in improvement the development of the children in the community during this critical time period in their lives…”
Whether you represent business, education, government or another aspect of our communities, this is a First Friday Forum you should attend.
A little homework first? This TED Talk by Timothy Bartik, senior economist at the W.E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research, makes the macro-economic case for preschool education — and explains why you should be happy to invest in it, even if you don't have kids that age (or kids at all). The economic benefits of well-educated kids, it turns out, go well beyond the altruistic. (Filmed at TEDxMiamiUniversity.)
