Job Description
The Sheriff’s Department is in search of Female Correctional Officers. These full time, 40 hour per week positions have a starting salary of $19.88/hr. to $27.83/hr. based on qualifications.
 
PURPOSE AND SUMMARY
Correctional officers are responsible for the security and order of inmates in Sheboygan County correctional facilities. They provide effective delivery of correctional services through the observance of all federal and state laws, county ordinances, correctional policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
A correctional officer maintains regular observation and rounds to detect potentially dangerous behavior and avert injury or death to inmates and staff by establishing and maintaining a continuous relationship with all inmates and will make reports to the supervisor regarding the attitude and behavior of inmates. A correctional officer, in the absence of a booking clerk, receives and books inmates and assigns and escorts inmates to cells or similar areas. A correctional officer assigns, supervises and inspects the work of inmates engaged in maintaining the cleanliness of the facility. A female correctional officer, without exception, will do strip searches of female inmates and male correctional officers, without exception, will do strip searches of male inmates. A correctional officer issues uniforms, bedding and health supplies, and assists in the delivery of meals in accordance with the food services program. A correctional officer maintains discipline among inmates through the enforcement of rules and regulations. A correctional officer may be required to transport/escort inmates to activities, appointments and court to ensure that inmates do not escape nor violate any laws when it is necessary for them to leave the facility. A correctional officer may be supervised and required to assist the corrections rehabilitation/huber corporal in carrying out program objectives. A correctional officer will inspect male and female inmate quarters for contraband and any unauthorized or otherwise dangerous materials. A correctional officer will employ only enough force as necessary to quell disturbances and maintain discipline. A correctional officer will provide continuous communication between one another, supervisors and shifts. A correctional officer will ensure inmates serve the correct amount of time and that each inmate's status is current. A correctional officer will record inmate movement within facility(s), when accepted and when released by a facility. A correctional officer will ensure that information is current and available for all other records necessary for the operation of the facilities and the department. A correctional officer will provide and maintain written reports. A correctional officer should detect activities, which are illegal or violations of inmate rules and regulations. A correctional officer will provide clear and accurate testimony in the courtroom relative to an illegal inmate activity within a facility. Any other duties ordered by the Sheriff or his/her designee.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma, or equivalent, and 60 college credits by date of hire. In-lieu-of 60 College Credits, the department will also accept candidates that hold or have held employment as a certified Corrections Officer, either Department of Corrections or County Corrections, or hold military veteran status, full-time for a minimum of one (1) year and left employment voluntarily with a good record and been out of that employment for less than three (3) years. Self-motivated with the ability to effectively, efficiently and entirely complete assignments with minimal supervision. Ability to communicate in a clear and concise fashion in both verbal and written communications. Ability to work independently or as part of a team. Ability to be supervised. Ability to function in stressful situations. Ability to effectively communicate in verbal and written form. Ability to maintain confidentiality and good working relationships with co-workers and other staff. Ability to maintain regular and predictable work attendance.
