The UW Sheboygan celebrates music with many concerts each year. On Thursday, December 6th, the Jazz Ensemble, the Chorus, and our Vocal Jazz Ensemble begin our official holiday festivities. The MUSE CONCERT (Music of the University Soloists and Ensembles) will begin at 7 p.m. in the UWGB-Sheboygan Campus Fine Arts Theatre. Selections for our concerts are chosen to challenge performers and engage our audience members. Professor Paul Sucherman* conducts both the Instrumental and Vocal Jazz Ensembles. His groups consistently perform professional or near professional jazz charts that audience members will know and enjoy. Our Chorus truly demonstrates inter-generational music. Connecting first year freshmen with lifelong singers (some we share with the Sheboygan Symphony Chorus) allows quick development and encouraging mentorship to our students while working on some difficult repertoire. Those in Sheboygan know Mrs. Tricia Marton well for her tremendous performance ability as well as for her gift of educating students of all ages. We are grateful to have her continued work as staff accompanist. Mr. Mike Schulz, choral conductor at Plymouth High School from 1990-2010, directs our combination community/student Chorus. Schulz received his B.M. in Music Education from St. Norbert College and his M.M. degree in Choral Conducting and Music History from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. For almost thirty years, he taught choral music at school districts in Illinois and Wisconsin. During those years he was active as a clinician and adjudicator. Since his retirement Mr. Schulz has developed a vibrant private voice studio and has free-lanced as music director for Sheboygan Theater Company, Victorian Village Summer Shows and Youth Theater Company of Plymouth. We are thrilled to have Mike as a faculty member. According to Talbott, this concert combines all that’s best about a university music department. “We engage the students in a variety of musical styles and encourage them to excel by gently raising the level of difficulty of the music. Our success is due, in large part, to the volunteer community members who participate in all three ensembles. They mentor for our students the sheer joy of making music together. That makes it no longer a course to take for credit; it’s a physical, emotional, and spiritual demonstration of lifelong learning.” Tickets: $10/adults and free to all local students. The box office opens at 6pm. For more information on this or any other musical event or music study at the UW, contact Dr. Christy Talbott, Head of our Music Dept., at Christy.talbott@uwc.edu. Handicapped seating is limited and may be reserved upon request by sending an email to the same address. *Active members in the community likely know Mr. Sucherman from his local work as musical director of TYA productions, various high school musical productions, and performances at the Paddock Club in Elkhart Lake, among other events.
