Safety Manager

As the Safety Manager, you'll be responsible for the creation, implementation and enforcement of all company safety and physical security programs within the scope of company requirements and government regulations. Must be familiar with world class safety leadership principles, government safety and security regulations and food industry safety practices. This position will support both the Plymouth and Oostburg facilities. Must have the ability to be flexible and work across a three-shift operation.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ability to draft and implement safety programs and policies, and train employees in all safety-related programs.
  • Organization skills that result in maintaining safety files and records that demonstrate compliance to safety program and policies.
  • Conduct trend analysis of Workers Compensation claims experience and serve as liaison between Workers Compensation Insurance carrier and injured employees.
  • Responsible for and make recommendations in compliance with OSHA regulations.
  • Escort employees of all agencies conducting safety, fire, and physical security audits through the facility.
  • Administer all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Administer all systems relating to entry of company premises including access codes, issuance of keys, and biometric entries.
  • Inspect and/or facilitate the inspection of all safety-related equipment on a regular monthly schedule, including scheduling all annual inspections e.g. fire extinguishers, eye washes, lifesaving PPE, fire systems, etc. 
  • Order suspension of activities that pose a threat to workers’ health and safety and recommend measures to Management that help protect workers from potentially hazardous work methods, processes, or materials.
  • Investigate safety-related accidents and incidents to identify root causes and preventive corrective actions.   Recommend how such accidents might be prevented in the future.
  • Develop and maintain an Industrial Hygiene Program that includes, noise, air quality, X-Ray, etc.
  • Investigate the adequacy of ventilation, lighting, and other conditions that could affect employee health, comfort, or performance.
  • Inspect and evaluate workplace environments, equipment, and practices to ensure compliance with safety standards and government regulations.
  • Review new and existing facility equipment for safety compliance, ergonomic impact, and associated hazard reduction and mitigation by collaborating with Engineering, OEM’s, and Contractors.
  • Lead a functional safety committee who focuses on doing safety work on the floor with the employees and which helps maintain compliance to Company Safety Programs.
  • Maintain and update emergency response plans and procedures including training company employees and conduct drills to test employee competency, company systems and equipment.
  • Create and conduct interactive training of safety related material for all employees using Power Point, Alchemy, and other training tools and aids.
Qualifications:
  • Post secondary education or training in Safety Management, Safety Engineering, or related field.
  • Three to five years leading, developing, and implementing occupational safety programs that results in eliminating or reducing workplace hazards, lower incident rates, and compliance with safety standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to work closely with employees and management to gain support for implementing safety and health programs.
  • Must have the ability to be flexible and work across a three-shift operation.
  • Knowledgeable in the application of government regulations in regard to general safety and food safety and security.
  • Able to communicate effectively with local, state, and federal regulatory agencies.
  • Requires a high level of confidentiality.
  • Requires excellent interpersonal skills to frequently deal with employees, management, and the general public.
  • Must have good written, communication, mathematical and analytical skills, problem solving ability and accuracy.
  • Knowledge of a personal computer, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Word.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently and efficiently to meet deadlines.
