The Gufs perform their first live concert of 2020 at the Weill Center - September 25 at 7:30
The Gufs reflect on local origins and loyal fans prior to first performance of 2020
After taking a musical hiatus, Milwaukee-based alternative pop-rock band, The Gufs are preparing to take the stage for their first live show since 2019 at the Weill Center, a 1,150-seat historic theater in Downtown Sheboygan. However, this show will look different. With socially distanced seating and masks required, the band is excited to perform an acoustic set to a live audience once again.
“The power of technology has truly been a blessing during these times, but nothing beats the feeling of being in a room together whether it be writing, recording or performing,” said Goran Kralj (vocals, piano, guitar) of the The Gufs. “To actually be looking at faces and into eyes versus a computer screen will be an amazing feeling.”
These past few months have been productive for the group given the ample opportunities to connect virtually with other artists. However, the ability to rehearse was a challenge. Despite this, the group managed to write and record HERO, their first studio release in 14 years, with members scattered throughout four different states.
Wisconsin - and Milwaukee in particular - has always been an important piece of The Gufs’ musical journey. Kralj attended University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where he met Gufs’ drummer Scott Schwebel. Kralj and Schwebel embraced the live music scene in Milwaukee and soon joined with Morgan Dawley (guitar), Dejan Kralj (bass), and later Brian Pettit (percussion) to create The Gufs in the fall of 1989. By 1995, The Gufs were signed to Atlantic Records.
“Our fans and Milwaukee radio are the reason we drew the attention of Atlantic, and our fans are still the reason we continue to perform today,” said Kralj. “Gufs fans are some of the most loyal and amazing people you will ever meet. It’s because of their dedication over the years that we got to the level we did. Continuing to play music now is a more of thank you to them.”
Goran and Morgan of The Gufs will bring their music to the Weill Center in Sheboygan on Friday, September 25 for an intimate night of acoustic music. The performance will be The Gufs’ first show of 2020 and the Weill Center’s second socially distanced concert of their 2020-21 season.
“It will be a night full of storytelling and Gufs songs sprinkled with a few covers,” said Kralj. “We can’t thank the Weill Center enough for allowing us and our fans to be together in a safe and responsible manner, in such a beautiful venue. We promise to make it a night to remember.”
