Team members are often promoted because they excel at being individual contributors and have a high degree to technical expertise.  Neither are necessarily required to lead other people and unless we are intentional about developing the leadership skills of high-producing staff, they will become frustrated, disillusioned and be less than stellar in their leadership role.  This does not have to be the reality we face in our organizations.
