British Playwright Tom Stoppard, who went on to write the screenplay for Shakespeare in Love, takes on a satirical, behind-the-scenes perspective of the two somewhat minor characters from Shakespeare's Hamlet. The play takes place mainly "in the wings" of Hamlet, with brief moments from the original play. Between these episodes, the main characters express their confusion about the events occurring around them, of which they never really receive any direct knowledge.
