Sheboygan Businesswoman Wins Regional Honor

Lynn Potyen, owner of The GameBoard, recognized as Woman of Influence.

SHEBOYGAN, WI — May 16, 2025 — The GameBoard, the innovative game store in Sheboygan, WI, that’s changing the way you think about playing games, is proud to announce that store owner Lynn Potyen has been recognized by Insight on Business with its 2025 Women of Influence Business Owner Award. Since Potyen opened the game store in 2006, she and her team have brought innovative gameplay to the community to stimulate brain development and advance critical thinking.

"Women of Influence recognizes women throughout the New North who have made a significant impact on their industry and community," Insight on Business stated on its website. "Winners are honored for how they have fundamentally transformed their fields and made significant contributions to the region through their professional work and community involvement."

Potyen won the award for her visionary approach that has transformed how people view tabletop gaming, from simple entertainment to a powerful tool for education, therapy, and community building. She was also recognized for creating a vital "Third Place" in the community, a space beyond home and work where people can connect and grow together.

This award acknowledges Potyen's extensive community involvement, including her service as Chair of the Business Advocacy Committee for the Sheboygan County Chamber of Commerce, Board Member of the Sheboygan Harbor Centre Business Improvement District, and her help with RCS Empowers Business Advisory Board. She has won multiple awards both locally and nationally, and contributed a chapter on the health benefits of gaming to the globally distributed book "What Board Games Mean to Me."

"It’s an honor to receive this award,” said Potyen. "Throughout my career, I've tried to show that games are more than just entertainment—they're powerful tools for education, therapy, and bringing people together. This recognition tells me that my message is getting out, which will give The GameBoard the ability to reach and positively impact more people.”

Potyen and the other winners will be honored at a luncheon on July 29th at the Oneida Casino Hotel in Green Bay and featured in the Women of Influence special edition.

When in Sheboygan, visit The GameBoard at 621 N. 8th Street in the city’s historic downtown or call (920) 453-4263.

About The GameBoard

The GameBoard was founded in 2006 by Lynn Potyen, an award-winning proprietor after her son was diagnosed with a severe speech delay, through his journey she was able to connect his therapy to the games they played at home. Since then, studies have shown that playing games together enhances creativity, fosters communication and socialization, and builds emotional skills and cognitive learning ability. Potyen is an outspoken advocate for using board games in education, therapy, and corporate team building. Her story is archived in the Library of Congress and in the 2023 book “What Board Games Mean to Me,” where she is part of an anthology featuring 28 voices from around the world.
