Volunteers Needed at Fresh Meals On Wheels
Monday through Friday, FMOW delivers more than 2000 meals a week to older adults and individuals with disabilities across the county. “Food is a basic need and knowing I’m helping to meet that need is rewarding,” shared Julia, a long time FMOW volunteer.
Meal delivery routes begin at 11:10 a.m. and typically take about an hour to complete, making it an easy and meaningful way for individuals, families, coworkers and retirees to give back to the community.
As harvest season is upon us, another volunteer opportunity is to assist with processing fresh produce in the Christopher Family Kitchen at FMOW. Fresh fruits and vegetables are donated throughout the year from community gardens, local farms and grown in the FMOW gardens. Volunteers help wash, sort, prepare and preserve produce, allowing it to be incorporated into nutritious and healthy meals served to meal recipients throughout the year.
FMOW is also encouraging local gardeners, farmers and community members to donate any surplus fresh produce to incorporate into fresh, nutritious meals for older adults and individuals with disabilities. Whether it’s a few extra tomatoes or a trailer full of squash, every donation helps. Donations are accepted Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the FMOW facility, 1004 S. Taylor Drive, Sheboygan, at the door marked “Produce” next to the garage.
Whether delivering meals or helping process fresh produce, volunteers play a crucial role in ensuring all meal recipients receive nutritious meals and caring connections to help them remain healthy, independent and living at home.
