General Manager: Thrift Store Operations

Description: The General Manager is responsible for all aspects of store and warehouse operations. Functional responsibilities include sales, pricing, marketing, customer service, safety, finances, and store operations. Also responsible for leading and training Volunteers and Employees in providing exceptional customer service. This position reports to the Sheboygan District Executive Director. 
 
RESPONSIBILITIES
This job description is a general description of essential job functions.  It is not intended as an employment contract, nor is it intended to describe all duties someone in this position may perform.  All Employees of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul are expected to perform tasks as assigned.

  • Routinely analyzes store’s financial performance; implements improvements to net revenue and reductions to operating costs.  
  • Communicates business results to Volunteers and Employees, creating improvement plans where needed.
  • Monitors and analyzes the customer service provided. Offers training, and encouragement, and develops action plans for improvement. Resolves customer complaints and helps respond to customers’ special needs.
  • Maintains understanding of all store departments; cross trains and ensures Volunteers and Employees are flexible.
 
WAREHOUSE AND DONATION PROCESSING
  • Organizes and maintains clean, safe warehouse - both interior and exterior.
  • Optimizes the handling, sorting and processing of all donated merchandise and ensures quality merchandise. 
  • Maintains security of items donated to Society of St. Vincent de Paul of Sheboygan.
  • Monitors condition and oversees maintenance of equipment, building and dock. Maintains a preventative maintenance program to minimize large repair costs.
 
OPERATIONS
  • Supervises merchandising by planning and implementing promotional space. Activities include pricing, display, signage, advertising, cleaning and arranging products.
  • Oversees all aspects of cash handling ensuring the opening / closing of the cash registers and cash deposits.
  • Organizes and maintains clean, safe store - both interior and exterior.
  • Analyzes inventory turns and supervises inventory management, including recycling opportunities.
  • Responds to emergencies.
  • Ensures Volunteers and Employees have working understanding of Point of Sale systems and software.
  • Evaluates operations and seeks opportunities to continuously improve processes and services.
 
PEOPLE MANAGEMENT
  • Builds and maintains respectful relationships; leads as a positive role model.
  • Complies with all company policies and maintains current handbook for Employees and Volunteers.
  • Responsible for employment decisions such as recruiting, hiring, coaching, and terminating.
  • Establishes performance objectives and priorities.
  • Evaluates work performance; provides feedback and coaching.
  • Assigns daily operational responsibilities and tasks with follow up for accountability and corrective action.
  • Monitors and approves Employees’ compensation.
  • Supervises changing shifts, task delegation and scheduling Volunteers and Employees.
  • Conducts specific training to protect Vulnerable Persons according to procedure.
  • Seeks self-development by monitoring own performance, setting high personal standards, seeking best practices.
  • Ensures a safe environment for Customers, Volunteers and Employees.
  • Ensures continued alignment and responds effectively to a changing environment.
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Requires standing for extended periods of time as well as the ability to walk, reach, bend, kneel and squat.
  • Requires the ability to lift 25 pounds or move items up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires accessing high shelves by ladder or similar equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Three years retail management experience minimum, including supervising others, managing, and assigning work.
  • Full time availability required, including flexibility for evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Effective written, oral and interpersonal communication skills
  • Proficiency in computer applications, including the ability to develop spreadsheets and documents.
  • Ability to respond well under pressure while maintaining composure.
  • Ability to provide a high level of service, as well as motivating Volunteers and Employees to do the same.
  • Builds enthusiasm within the store to create a positive work environment.
  • Associate Degree required, Bachelor’s Degree preferred
