The John Michael Kohler Arts Center (JMKAC) is a nationally acclaimed visual and performing arts center located in the heart of downtown Sheboygan, Wisconsin. It is within walking distance of Lake Michigan and one hour from Milwaukee and Green Bay. While other museums focus on objects, JMKAC and its recently opened Art Preserve focus on relationships with artists and the community, and on preserving and exhibiting artist-built environments. Founded in 1967, the John Michael Kohler Arts Center’s presents works by diverse artists, from the vernacular to classically trained and from local to global perspectives. JMKAC establishes a community locally and nationally with its rotating, original contemporary art exhibitions, live performances and events, classes, workshops and an on-site preschool.

Are you passionate about cleaning?  Would you like to go to work and be inspired by your surroundings?  The John Michael Kohler Arts Center (Sheboygan, WI) is seeking a Custodian to be responsible for the cleanliness and upkeep of all six Art Center locations including museum spaces, preschool, restrooms, office areas, kitchens and living.  This role positively contributes to the overall visitor and staff experience.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Wash and sanitize all surfaces, fixtures, and toilets in bathrooms daily. Dust, wash and sanitize other surfaces as specified in schedule. Refill paper towel, tissue, toilet paper and hand soap in all dispensers. Collect, bag, and throw out all trash and garbage into a closed dumpster.
  2. Clean any spills or other hazards that occur to prevent injuries to people or property.
  3. Vacuum all carpeting, spot clean carpets as necessary.  Sweep and clear entrance spaces.
  4. Wet mop or use floor scrubber machine to wash floors, including in bathrooms and café.
  5. Disinfect and clean garbage and trash cans.
  6. Perform heavy cleaning tasks such as shampooing carpets, stripping / waxing floors, and other specified tasks.
  7. Follow procedures for chemical cleaners and power equipment to prevent damage to floors and fixtures.
  8. Wash windows (inside and outside).
  9. Assist team members to ensure tasks are completed.
  10. Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of cleaning procedures and practices in a work setting
  • Knowledge of safe handling and disposal of chemical liquids and other hazardous components
  • Proficient communication skills to interact with other staff and the public
  • Reliable and detail-oriented
  • Good time management abilities

  • Work with minimal supervision
Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma/GED, required
  • One year of previous cleaning experience
  • Valid Wisconsin driver’s license
  • Previous usage and maintenance of industrial cleaning equipment

Specific vision abilities when performing this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. 

Able to read and interpret documents, write routine correspondence, speak effectively with others.  Able to add, subtract, multiply and divide using whole numbers. Able to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Able to deal with problems involving few concrete variables in standard situations.

The position is office/art gallery and grounds based and noise level usually moderate.  May occasionally work inside or outside at events where noise level could be moderate to loud. 
Hours of work include daytime hours Monday – Friday and occasionally Saturday and Sunday to meet staffing and/or event needs.

The position works at various locations depending on the schedule.  This position must be able to commute between locations if needed.
